The organizers of Business in Japan, a 9000+ member LinkedIn group, invited me to speak at their first Executive Hirameki (they explain what that means).
Ethics and Sustainability
- How do we do business ethically and still thrive?
- Where does sustainability fit in during a global recession?
- How does culture affect business ethics?
- Where does Japan fit in?
These are just some questions to think about as we gather for the inaugural Executive Hirameki.
Being chosen to speak at an event outside of company customer gatherings is a first for me. And it shows me how private identity and professional reputation grow to overlap. Blog and meet and surprises can happen. Separation of the identities is not compatible with sharing, as that results in getting known. It is not, ahem, sustainable, and not necessary. *
My view of the chain of reasons for this engagement, minor links omitted for brevity:
0. Experienced and contributed to the awesome power of like minds collaborating by BBS, since 1988, in the Tokyo PC User Group.
1. Professional growth and support in the company leading to the position as compliance and ethics officer I proposed and assumed in 2006.
2. The two active social networks I joined in 2008 August, LinkedIn, and Triiibes (by invitation only); soon there were more.
3. Triiibes members and projects helped me to experience more of the joy of creation and sharing. Thanks.
4. Started blogging in 2008 September, because Seth Godin said it's useful. Or, why not? He and Tom Peters later expanded on this. Thanks, Anne McCrossan, for leading me over the hump by your visceral example.
5. The Tribes Casebook and the Tribes Q&A eBook projects plus co-authoring Alex Osterwalder's Business Model Generation book.
6. Business in Japan meeting 2009 October, where I went to meet one of the BMG co-authors. Talked to Rob Pereyda, the BiJ founder and others, exchanged calling cards, left early, but snapped a few photos and sent to Rob, free to use, creative commons license. He had one of those photos turned into that banner for Executive Hirameki (they explain what that means).
If you are near Tokyo on February 24, drop in, meet some great people and contribute to the discussion. It would be an honor.
If you have materials or ideas you wish to share for my spark talk on ethics and sustainability, I will be grateful. For references I actually use, I will put your name and link in the presentation. For now, I do not know how the event will be shared, so no guarantee how or whether it will spread.
*) CoCreatr is my flickr name that I grew into my pen name for private blogging 'n' tweeting only. It has a pretty clean signal on the web (Yahoogle it). I do not wish to connect it to the company in public. I do connect my biological name with my pen name on twitter and elsewhere, that is it. I disclose affiliation and conflict of interest.
